Collagen

What is collagen and what is it good for?

What does collagen do?

Collagen is very important for your overall health. It not only helps your skin but is also found in muscles, bones, and cartilage. An occasional extra dose can’t hurt. It can help with:

  • Skin elasticity

Collagen ensures that the skin remains elastic. This results in a more radiant and fuller skin and thus counteracts skin aging. However, from the late twenties, you lose about 1% collagen per year. It is therefore important to support collagen production.

  • Protects the organs

The connective tissue around the intestines protects digestion. Collagen is an important part of this.

  • Building muscles

Collagen not only helps the skin but is also very important for muscles. It contains glycerine, which provides the muscles with sufficient nutrition.

In which foods is collagen found?

It is very important for your entire body to keep your collagen levels high. You can most easily get collagen through your diet. Think of a diet with good proteins, oils, fibers, fatty acids, fruits, and vegetables. White meat, quinoa, salmon, beans, lentils, nuts, leafy greens, berries, and citrus fruits are real collagen bombs. Additionally, there are capsules on the market that contain a high amount of collagen. These capsules are used in a course form, allowing you to increase your body's collagen levels.

What does collagen do for the skin?

Collagen ensures that the skin remains elastic. Elasticity in the skin makes the skin firmer and more radiant. From the late 20s, you lose about 1% collagen per year, which leads to skin aging. You might now think: "I need to get a cream with collagen." Unfortunately, you won’t find a cream listing collagen as an ingredient, simply because the collagen components are too large to be absorbed through the pores. That is why it is important to have the right ingredients in your skincare that stimulate collagen production.

Some examples of ingredients that do this:

  • Collagen peptides: active substances that stop the decrease of collagen.
  • Retinol: this derivative of vitamin A ensures that cells renew faster, resulting in new collagen production.
  • Vitamin C: collagen needs vitamin C to be produced. If your skin lacks sufficient vitamin C, this results in dull skin. Therefore, preferably use products that contain a combination of these ingredients, such as our balanced Herbal Formulas.
